CBS Forgeries: Thursday 30 Sept 2004

  1. Halberstam voices criticism of CBS 'star journalism': "What they did was very stupid," Halberstam said. "But they have been heading in that direction for a long time. I've always been critical of this whole business of star journalism, where you have a big anchor coming on air and acting as a prosecutor with someone else's reporting. In many instances over the years on that program the reports have been lightly or poorly sourced and the reporting suffers as a result. Dan Rather right now is the principal anchor of the Evening News, but he is also the program's main reporter. Then he's the anchor of 48 Hours. On top of that he's the star of 60 Minutes II. That's just too much for one person and it leads to the kind of sloppiness in their reporting that just happened. (nashvillecitypaper.com)
  2. Dan does it again (nypost)
  3. Texas Att'y Gen'l Launches Rathergate Probe
Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott has launched a criminal investigation into forged military records allegedly obtained from President Bush's National Guard file that were aired by CBS News three weeks ago, referring a congressional request for the probe to the investigative division of the Texas Rangers. (newsmax)
  4. More Than Scandal, CBS Saga May Indicate Crime: In Texas, the state in which Burkett concedes the false National Guard memos originated, it is a felony to make or present two or more documents with knowledge of their falsity and with intent that they be taken as a genuine governmental record. Under the U.S. Code, use of an interstate telephone wire, such as the one used to transmit an image of the forged documents from Texas to CBS headquarters, triggers federal jurisdiction. (foxnews)
  5. INDC Interviews CBS:"The truth of the e-mails were absolutely irrelevant to the piece, because all the story said was that people were worried. It’s a story about human beings that are afraid of the draft. We did not say that this (e-mail) was true, it’s just circulating. We are not verifying the e-mail." (indcjournal)
  6. Iraq missions that work out are missing from mainstream media: "media emphasis on Iraq being in chaos has coincided with John Kerry making the same pitch to voters. It makes you wonder, just as we did on the authenticity of Dan Rather's reporting. And now America knows about Rather's ruse." (tennessean.com)

OTHER

  • Kerry's myth making: Exaggeration is a familiar political staple, but presidential candidates usually are held to a higher standard. Kerry's recent descent into myth making may reflect the campaign's anxiety in the final weeks. The immediate questions are whether he will engage in misstatements during Thursday's first presidential debate, and whether he will be challenged if he does. (bob novak, townhall)
  • Pacifist Hatfield supports Iraq war: Compare the attention given that item with a story that truly is surprising: Last week, former Oregon governor and senator Mark Hatfield, now 82, announced his strong support for the American effort in Iraq. He said, "Our world changed on Sept. 11, 2001. ... We have paid dearly with American and Iraqi lives for our commitment, but we cannot afford the alternative."
So what? Is he one more bloviating politician? No, this is Mark Hatfield, the most prominent evangelical in politics during the 1960s, and one who led opposition to the Vietnam War and every American military effort since.

CBS Forgeries: Wednesday 29 Sept 2004

  1. IT WAS LATE, KERRY SAID, REFERRING TO NOON
The good news is John Kerry did an interview on Good Morning America, and he was asked about his "I voted for it before I voted against it" comment.
Kerry responded, "No, it wasn’t classic at all. It just was a very inarticulate way of saying something, and I had one of those inarticulate moments late in the evening when I was dead tired in the primaries and I didn't say something very clearly."
Hey, it happens! No big deal. Everybody has made a comment that doesn't make sense late at night... except...
“‘I actually did vote for his $87 billion, before I voted against it,’ he told a group of veterans at a noontime appearance at Marshall University. He went on to explain that he preliminarily backed the request, so long as it was financed not by deficit spending but with a tax surcharge on the wealthy that Bush opposed.”
As Bush spokesman Steve Schmidt suggested, maybe his watch was on Paris time.
    (kerryspot, nationalreview)
  2. Old dog, old tricks
Ratherbiased.com (whose site is down now) and Little Green Footballs detail how CBS News last night used discredited documents to attack President Bush:
In a story that was a textbook example of slipshod reporting, CBS reporter Richard Schlesinger used debunked internet hoax emails and an unlabeled interest group member to scare viewers into believing that the U.S. government is poised to resume the draft. (powerlineblog)
  3. TIMESMAN TIPPED OFF TERROR CHARITY: FEDS -- The Justice Department has charged that a veteran New York Times foreign correspondent warned an alleged terror-funding Islamic charity that the FBI was about to raid its office — potentially endangering the lives of federal agents. (ny post)
  4. CBS flawed report on draft: And now Dan Rather puts this story on the air -- fake emails, fake "apolitical, Republican mom" -- at the same time Kerry and the DNC are pushing the "Bush wants to reinstate the draft" line. (ace of spades)
  5. Network News Flash: Probe By Brooks Boliek
WASHINGTON (Hollywood Reporter) - CBS may have escaped congressional scrutiny into the controversy over allegedly forged documents detailing President Bush's National Guard service, but only until the election is over. (reuters)
  6. Further complicating matters for CBS and Dan Rather, the legacy media has unwittingly opened up another angle on probable malfeasance, when they proudly announced that Rather producer Mary Mapes had been the recipient of sensitive Abu Ghraib investigative documents and photos. Just as we are unsure of the actual source of the Guard memo forgeries, the same can be said for the source of the Abu Ghraib materials.
However, a partial chain of connection is revealed upon further examination of contemporary media accounts and the Taguba Report (the high level official inquiry) itself . (americanthinker)

  3. Exposing intellectual morons - interview w/Dan Flynn: Banescu: Does Dan Rather's forged memos fiasco provide even more support to your theory that ideology is more important than truth to this crowd?
Flynn: Rathergate is a microcosm of the main idea of this book, which is that ideology makes smart people fall for stupid ideas. Had Dan Rather and his underlings at CBS been motivated by getting at the truth rather than advancing a specific political agenda, they would have never fallen for the forged memos.

  4. How the Mighty Have Fallen: This is the reason that the liberals are so anxious to shut down talk radio. This is why they curse Fox News and are trying to figure out a scheme to put them out of business. This is why the liberals are so anxious to tax and regulate the Internet. These are the gasps of a dying industry. Rather resign? Heck no. He should stay there so he can go down with the ship. (american spectator)

  1. Fake and inaccurate: Like all Guard members, Lt. Bush was required to accrue a minimum of 50 points (annually) to meet Guard service requirements (a minimum of 300 points in six years). What the liberal media may not have covered in their many articles about Lt. Bush's ANG service is that Lt. DNC exploits CBS propaganda

1) Sep 8, 2004
McAuliffe Statement on Breaking News About Bush's Military Record dnc.org link

Washington, D.C. - Responding to breaking news regarding George W. Bush's military record, Democratic National Committee Chairman Terry McAuliffe issued this statement:
"George W. Bush's cover story on his National Guard service is rapidly unraveling.
"Tonight's CBS New report made clear that President Bush has misrepresented the nature of his National Guard service for decades to the American people. And now that questions are being raised, only Bush can settle this once and for all by answering the unanswered questions about his Guard service.
"CBS News exclusively obtained documents that flatly contradict two of Bush's often repeated claims about his time in the National Guard - that he received no special treatment and that he fulfilled his duty.
"According to these new military documents, political pressure was applied and strings were pulled for President Bush at every step of the process: to get in the Guard, to stay in the Guard, and to exit the Guard.
"These are serious charges. They have not been leveled by his opponent. Or by a political party. Or by an outside group. They are based on documents from the personal files of Col. Jerry Killian, Bush's squadron commander.
"George W. Bush needs to answer why he regularly misled the American people about his time in the Guard and who applied political pressure on his behalf to have his performance reviews 'sugarcoated'?"

Bush Lied And Needs to Answer the Questions Himself dnc.org link

BUSH LIED: SAID HE GOT NO SPECIAL TREATMENT IN THE NATIONAL GUARD
Moderator: You are confident no influence was exercised on your behalf [in getting a spot in the Guard]?George W. Bush: I am, yeah. [1994 Texas Governor's Debate]
…BUT BEN BARNES PULLED STRINGS TO GET HIM IN
Dan Rather: …Barnes says he had a meeting with the late oilman Sid Adger, a friend to both Barnes and then-congressman George Bush….Ben Barnes: …But he said, basically, would I help young George Bush get in the Air National Guard? Rather: Barnes says he contacted his longtime friend, General James Rose, the head of Texas' Air National Guard…. Rather: And you recommended George W. Bush? Barnes: Yes, I did. Rather: You said that you did this for others, what we normally call "preferential treatment." Barnes: Oh, I would describe it as preferential treatment. [CBS "60 Minutes," 9/9/04]
BUSH LIED: SAID HE FULFILLED HIS DUTY
Bush, speaking from the Oval Office in 2004: "I'm just telling you, I did my duty." [Meet the Press, 2/8/04]
…BUT HE DISOBEYED A DIRECT ORDER TO TAKE A PHYSICAL AND WAS GROUNDED
"President Bush failed to carry out a direct order from his superior in the Texas Air National Guard in May 1972 to undertake a medical examination that was necessary for him to remain a qualified pilot, according to documents made public yesterday." [Washington Post, 9/9/04]
The colonel [Killian] goes on, the "officer," meaning then-Lieutenant Bush, "has made no attempt to meet his training certification or flight physical." [CBS "60 Minutes," 9/9/04]
…BUT HE TRIED TO GO OVER HIS COMMANDER'S HEAD TO GET A POSITIVE EVALUATION
In August 1972, Bush's superior officer Lt. Col. Jerry Killian notes in a memo that Bush had gone over his head and was "talking to someone upstairs" to avoid service in Alabama. [CBS "60 Minutes," 9/9/04]>…BUT HE MISSED MONTHS OF DUTY
"Yet Bush, a fighter-interceptor pilot, performed no service at all for one six-month period in 1972 and for another period of almost three months in 1973, the records show." [Boston Globe, 9/8/04]
BUSH LIED…AND THE ONLY WAY GEORGE BUSH PUTS THIS BEHIND HIM IS TO ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS FOR HIMSELF
